About This Work

Warhol created four related drawings based on the front page of the New York Daily News from January 24, 1961, with the headline “Pirates Seize Ship with 900.” In one of these drawings, Warhol drew the front page by hand, sensationalizing the headline by adding multiple zeros to the number of passengers taken hostage and then misspelling, whether intentionally or not, the word “seize.” The dramatic story of the hijacking is juxtaposed with two other stories.
